George R. R. Martin Reading

I got to go to a George R. R. Martin reading on Tuesday. It was interesting and a lot of fun. Not surprisingly, it was also sold out. The standby line for tickets was quite long, too.

He read two chapters from book six, although he said that by the time the book is published (no guess on when that will be) the parts he read will have changed substantially. The first chapter he read was from the POV of Victarion Greyjoy and the other was from Tyrion's POV. Book 6 apparently starts 5 minutes after the end of A Dance with Dragons. And that's all I know about book 6

He mentioned the series has a 60 million dollar budget and will be shooting in 4 locations for season 3, including Morocco.

Then there was a Q & A session. One of the more interesting answers was to the question about what changes from the books to the HBO series he particularly liked or disliked. He said he particularly liked two additions that hadn't been in the books (which didn't mean they didn't happen) because they took place between characters who were not POV characters or who weren't POV characters yet. The first scene he mentioned was between Robert and Cersei where she asks him if there was ever a time he might have loved her. It's interesting because it's a scene that has stuck with me. The other scene he mentions is from season 2's "Blackwater" which is my favorite episode of all time. He wrote the episode but apparently he didn't write the scene in the tavern between Bron and the Hound. He didn't mention anything he didn't like in terms of deletions, though he said he really wished they had 12 episodes rather than 10.

He was asked the "so if you die..." question. The fan tried to be tactful about it but as Martin said, she was really asking what happens when you die. And his response was if the plane is going down he's going to have bigger problems than the fucking series (his words). But basically he doesn't want anyone else writing in his world. He's been trying to say no more often so he can work on the book but he's got about 3 years of commitments.

He also talked about getting at least one letter a month (always from Americans) objecting to the graphic sex, although as of yet no one has objected to the equally graphic violence.

He said he's gotten letters requesting gay male sex scenes, all from women (duh). And that Renly/Loras was canon in the books.

Martin also said he'd be House Stark and that he'd had Write Like the Wind sent to him about 700 times.

I had a great time and Martin clearly has a wonderful sense of humor.

Speaking of books, seanan_mcguire has a really interesting post about Disney princesses and kick ass urban fantasy females who don't have any female friends.

Yay!

I've never been to a reading. I'd like to do so sometime. There's a big book festival in DC every year where major authors do several and I never make it.

Really? Wow. Sometimes I forget how literary my city is. There's always a big scifi/fantasy reading series in June/July because Clarion West is held out here. The UW hosts a lot of readings.

Is there any author in particular you'd like to go see?
