I'm not obsessed, I'm just intensely focused

I tend to cycle between three things: reading, fandom/writing and playing video games. At any one time I’m heavily invested in one, maybe two things, but when I try and do all three I start to lose focus. I also tend to watch an unhealthy amount of television and usually have several projects going at once which means they all move very slowly.

Books & Reading: I frequently enjoy reading. I read mostly fiction but I’ve started to read more non-fiction over the years. I read a lot of urban fantasy (particular books in a series), post-apocalyptic fiction and zombie novels. My taste in non-fiction tends to revolve around politics or disease and lately my focus has been on the economic collapse and its aftermath. I’ve posted a mini review of every book I’ve read since January 1, 2007 at goodreads. Some reviews are only a few sentences but for books I really loved or hated the reviews can be quite long.

Digital Photography: I bought a new camera a few years ago and was reminded how much I love taking pictures. I’ve been reading photography books and using my Nikon S9100. I want to master it before I even consider investing the time and money in a DSLR. I have Adobe Photoshop Elements but I really need to invest time in learning how to use it. You can see my public photos on Flickr.

Fandom: My current shiny is the BBC’s Sherlock which I’ve just fallen in love with. I'm hoping to become an active participant rather than just lurking. I'm semi-resisting seeking out Skyfall fic because I find I can only really focus on one fandom at a time and I'm quite enjoying immersing myself in Sherlock. Finally, I’m fannish about Up with Chris Hayes on MSNBC, or at least, as fannish as one can be about such shows. I enjoy reading and writing fanfic, particularly slash.

News & Politics: I am a social and economic Liberal which means that I’m a woman without a party. I have a deep and passionate interest in politics and I expect to write about it quite a bit. These days I get my news from a variety of sources. I follow a lot of links from people on Twitter (I follow a lot of journalists from various publications) which unfortunately means most of the time the best I can do is remember I read something “on the Internet,” always great for credibility. I watch The Rachel Maddow Show most nights and Up with Chris Hayes on the weekend. I think of it as a lecture from your favorite professor and the conversation you have after class with your smartest friends. I check Matt Tiabbi’s Blog which is always worth reading and usually horribly depressing.

Video Games: I prefer playing games on the conole rather than the computer. My console of choice is the Xbox 360 but I’m not fannish about it which is to say I’m not interested in the console wars. I think the PS3 and Wii are perfectly fine consoles, I just happen to play the 360. My favorite genre is WRPG but I also enjoy survival horror. For a long time I only played single player games but over the last year or so I’ve started playing more multiplayer games. This is due in large part to the awesome people I’ve met on True Achievements. I’m also on 360voice, mostly for the challenges.
